This house was bought by my father in 1949
and assembled in Forest Heights, MD. His three girls were raised
in this house (I am the first born). When he heard that the Lustron
company was going out of business, he bought another house as a
package (unassembled) in 1950. He designed the second house as the
living quarters and the first house was remodeled as the bedroom
quarters. The two houses are joined at right angles.

My father died
before the house was finished, but his three daughters finished
the house as he planned in 2007. It is now a four bedroom 3
bath house. The original living room and dining/kitchen rooms
are now two bedrooms. The original utility room is a bath room
with laundry hook-ups. The second part of the house is finished
with current materials such as wood floors, wood kitchen cabinets,
energy saver picture and casement windows to take advantage
of the view of the river, and drywall and plaster walls. |
A standard brick chimney was
installed at one point. Recently we found the original Lustron casing
for the chimney and had it installed over the brick to make it more
authentic. We also had all the windows replaced. The original windows
were only single pane and the seals were dried and caked causing
air and water leaks. The house sits on a double lot to accommodate
the double house. I believe that it is the largest residential Lustron
in the country.
