I can't tell you
how much I enjoyed reading your webpage about the Lustron Homes. In
1949 (when I was 9 yrs old) my family purchased one of these and had
it assembled in Cincinnati, Ohio - 2631 Jessup Road - Mt. Airy. Ours
was yellow and my Dad choose a lot that sloped uphill in order to
place it at the top. Away from the road but still quite visible to
cars driving by. At the bottom of the hill he placed a wrought iron
lamp post -which helped to light it up after dark. It was quite a
conversation piece back then...
Shortly after we moved in my Dad built a
garage. It wasn't metal like the house but he painted it with some
type of paint that made it look like it was - and it matched- beautifully!
Of all the places I've lived (before and since then) this house
is the one that serves up the best memories. And to this day, it
is still there - in terrific shape, maintenance wise. Unfortunately,
I don't have a picture of it or the garage but the next time I get
a chance, I'll try to get over there and take a picture for you.
I think you'll be amazed at the garage especially!
Though my parents are long gone (Mom 1994
and Dad 1998) that is the one "monument" that I will always
associate and attribute with and to them! My Dad was a Cincinnati
Police Officer (for 20 yrs) and his name was: Melvin W. Wirmel.
I have no idea who owns it today.
I've traveled cross country and lived in
many states. In my travels, I've spotted about 8 of them. I was
shocked to see how many had been built. When we bought ours we were
told there were only 12 throughout the USA! Thanks again for taking
the time to post this info. It's nice to see pleasant memories from
my childhood!
